MetLife has paid our claims, but $351 a month for two dogs?

Pet owner experience

We've had MetLife for our two dogs since 2023. They're three and five years old, and the renewal quote just came in at $351.11 a month. That's a 49% increase, even with a discount through work.

Here's why I'm struggling with it: the coverage itself has been good. We have a $250 combined deductible and 90% reimbursement. Claims have been paid without trouble. One dog gets prescription food, but most of what we do is routine or preventive care.

I don't want to give up a plan that's worked, but $351 every month is a lot. What would you change first?

Update: I called MetLife. Moving from unlimited coverage to a $10,000 annual limit while keeping the other terms the same would bring it down to $261.71 a month. That's a lot more manageable, though I'm still worried about what next year's increase will look like.

Another owner's response Summer 2026

One person suggested asking what 80% reimbursement would cost while keeping the deductible. Others said to check whether the quote is for both dogs and how the annual limit affects the price.

I am glad you called and got actual numbers. Saving around $89 a month is meaningful, but the tradeoff is the $10,000 annual cap if you have a very expensive year. I would check benefits already paid in a typical year and think about how much you could cover in a worst-case year. Would you feel comfortable with that cap?
