Behavioral & alternative care
Behavioral therapy, rehabilitation, acupuncture, hydrotherapy and other complementary treatments are increasingly used in veterinary care, but insurers do not treat them uniformly. Some include them in the base plan; others require an add-on or rider.
Behavioral, rehabilitation and complementary care solve different problems
Behavioral therapy
Veterinary diagnosis, behavior-modifying medication and professional therapy for eligible anxiety, compulsive behavior or other covered behavioral conditions.
Physical rehabilitation
Therapeutic exercise, mobility work, laser therapy or other rehabilitation after surgery, injury or illness.
Acupuncture & related care
Acupuncture, hydrotherapy, chiropractic and other complementary modalities may be included, optional or excluded depending on the provider.
Coverage usually depends on why the treatment is being used
Rehabilitation for a pre-existing orthopedic problem can remain excluded even if rehabilitation itself is a covered modality.
General obedience training or non-veterinary wellness services are commonly different from covered behavioral treatment.
Policies can cover acupuncture or hydrotherapy while still excluding experimental, unproven or non-veterinary treatments.
Behavioral benefits in particular may have a specific annual cap even when the main policy has a much higher or unlimited annual limit.

Rehabilitation can turn one surgery into months of follow-up costs
Look beyond the surgery benefit.
A covered orthopedic surgery may be followed by physical therapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture or other rehabilitation. If those treatments are excluded or optional, the policyholder can face substantial additional out-of-pocket costs after the primary surgery is complete.
The same principle applies to behavioral conditions: medication may be covered while professional behavior sessions are limited, optional or excluded.
Behavioral and alternative-care questions
Compare the recovery phase, not only the initial treatment.
Behavioral therapy and rehabilitation can become recurring costs after the main diagnosis or surgery.
